By now, surfers are generally aware that the materials that go into most boards and wetsuits are not sustainable. Dutch shaper Job Verpoorte puts it best: it’s the “surfer’s contradiction.” We play in the ocean and by extension want it to be protected, and yet we need petroleum products to stay warm and catch waves.
Our friends at Sustainable Surf have been involved in trying to reshape the industry through ECOBOARD certification and more. But, a new documentary called UNSUSTAINABLE contends that a movement toward, or maybe back to, wooden craft may be the answer.
